Coalition Members Spread the Word
at a Number of Community Events
New Program Director Cyndy Hillier and other coalition members have been busy attending fall Tualatin community events such as the Pumpkin Regatta and Starry Nights & Holiday Lights tree-lighting event. At these events they meet other Tualatin families, business and community leaders, spreading the word about prevention. Getting the word out to parents and the community is such an important part of what the coalition does, because prevention begins with education. As parents learn more, they are less likely to allow their children to use drugs or alcohol. The more people in the community learn about prevention, the easier it is to do the harder work, such as changing legislative policy, etc. We can always use more help in this effort! Join us!
Student Group Participates in Its
First Week of Red Ribbon Events
The Tualatin Together student group, STAND UP, has hit the ground running in its first year. This group, which helps promote alcohol and drug-free fun and education at Tualatin High and in the community, held its first Red Ribbon hand painting event. Many students participated by signing a contract not to drink or use drugs and then painting their hand to make a hand print on a large banner that hangs in the entrance way at Tualatin High School. The banner serves as a reminder of the large number of students who choose to make good choices. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest national youth prevention effort.
Students who would like to make a difference in their school and community are encouraged to join. For more information call 503-707-9266.
Drug Turn-In Event
On Oct 29, the Tualatin Police Department joined the rest of the
nation in holding a prescription and non-prescription drug turn-in event
at the Tualatin Police Department. The event was a success. More than 100 pounds of drugs were collected which are now out of the reach of
our youth. Similar events were held in other cities throughout the
Portland area including Beaverton, Tigard and Hillsboro. Watch for
the next Drug Turn-In Event to be held sometime in the fall. More
information to come.

Coalition Summer Picnic
On July 8th, Tualatin Together held its first annual Coalition Summer
Picnic. Many families and community leaders gathered to share ideas while enjoying roasted hot dogs and cole slaw. Fun and activities for kids
included face painting, soccer, balloons, and more.
General information about prevention and the work of the coalition was
provided to the public. In addition, José Álvarez, the Tualatin Together
student group leader and prevention specialist, was there to answer
questions about fall plans for the student group at Tualatin High School.
